Barron's How to Prepare for the Toefl : Test of English As a Foreign Language
Published in Audio Cassette by Barrons Educational Series (March, 1999)
Author: Pamela J. Sharpe
Average review score:

I was looking for a book not a tape cassete.
Today I used your search machine looking for a book and bought thinking I was buying a book, and when I received my order confirmation #104-0835139-3206048, I discovered that I bought a tape. No problem, but I bought a CD set from the same author, and I was looking for a exercise book. I'm very angry about this.

Good Practice! LISTENING IS *NOT* ON CASSETTE, IT IS ON CD!
First, this book does NOT come with audiocassettes! Instead, the audio portion of the book comes on 4 CDs. So, if you do not have a CD player, you will NOT be able to listen to the Listening Practice.

This book does NOT have a computer test. Instead, it has some questions in the book that simulate the computer questions. Half of the tests are written for people who have to take the paper test, the other half are for people who have to take the computer test.

If you can only buy one book, you need a review of grammar and other sections of the test, and you want some practice tests, this book is your best choice. It has a lot of grammar explanations and lots of practice questions. So, it is a great value--the price is low, and you get a lot of questions.

However, the book is not perfect. Some of the questions are old, and you will not see those types on the TOEFL anymore. Furthermore, many of the questions are easier than the real TOEFL, especially the reading sections. Many of my students have said that the reading section is very, very hard and that they were not prepared for the real TOEFL when they took it.

In short, if you can only buy one book, this one is okay, but you really should buy official TOEFL materials so that you will be ready for the real test when you take it.

CDrom
How can I have the Cdrom on this book?

Edith Wharton's Ethan Frome (Barron's Book Notes)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (April, 1985)
Authors: George Ehrenhaft and Edith Wharton
Average review score:

Ethan Frome
I thought Ethan Frome was an average book. At times though, I had to push myself to read it because I'm not really into romance novels. Edith Wharton (the Author) gives the book a lot of details at times and I think thats why I found the book to be only average. Although, I like the way that Edith Wharton brought Jotham into the story. He doesn't play a major role like Ethan, Zeena, or Mattie, but his character helped bring their house to life. The book was about a young lady who took care of Ethans mother in her last hours (Zeena) and Ethan and her begin to fall in love. The interesting twist to the story is that when Zeena begins to also have a life threatening disease, her cousin Mattie comes to live with them to help out around the house. Ethan and Mattie start to fall in love and the rest of the story takes off from there. I don't want to give away the ending because that is about the only part in the book that I actually liked and enjoyed reading.

Not what it seems
I thought that this book was a great book. Instead of just telling the plot, Edith Wharton used a lot of symbolism to tell the story and show the characters emotions, because the point of view is that of an objective bystander. It isn't a very good book if you just want to read for plot, but if you want to read something a little deeper, it's a very interesting book.

A love story as bitter as the New England winter
Inside a bare Massachussetts farmhouse a century ago, a man and two women sit down to dinner. Observing the unhappy trio is a traveler, forced to take shelter with the strange family because of the blizzard that rages outside. Of the three, one is proud, stoic, and hard-bitten; one is shrewish and whiny, and one works silently at the tasks that must be done -- stoking the fire, setting the table for dinner. What brought these three to their present state, and what holds them here in this living hell? This book is an incisive character study with an unexpected ending. The portrayal of the three in the final chapter left me with chills.

Ferrets: Everything About Purchase, Care, Nutrition, Diseases, Behavior, and Breeding (Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (February, 1995)
Authors: E. Lynn Morton, Chuck Morton, Matthew M. Vriends, and Fox Morton
Average review score:

10 Years Hardly Made Any Difference
There are many more up-to-date reference books on the Domestic Pet Ferret. It's an add to my Ferret book collection only. I recommend researching all books available before deciding to be owned by Ferrets.

Not bad, but not great either
While some of the information is unique to this book (like the part about ferret sounds and body language) there are some alarming errors (a ferret should NEVER be housed in an aquarium!). Use it as an additional reference, but not your primary one. You should have several different sources to refer to anyway.

Excellent: Ferrets 101
Although I liked the companion book (Training Your Pet Ferret) more, this is an excellent concise guide for someone who knows nothing about ferrets. This is not a book for anyone who has even a working knowledge about ferret behavior. But then again I haven't found a good guide yet that goes in depth into ferret matters for those of us who know the basics about them, but would like to know more.

How to Prepare for the Nursing School Entrance Exams (Barrons How to Prepare for the Nursing School Entrance Exams, 1998)

Barron's How To Prepare for The Nursing School Entrance Exam
Overall I did not care for this book. I found several mistakes througout the sample test and was therefore concerned about what mistakes I did not catch. I would not recommend this book for test preparation at all.

Egregious mistakes
In the chapter "Numerical Ability," the book incorrectly solves the sample problem, Calculate: (3/4)(7 + 13) / 4(3 * 2) + 15. It makes two egregious mistakes: it misstates the rule of precedence and then even incorrectly applies its own rule. This gives the wrong answer, 0.3846.

In the same chapter under the section "Order of Operations," it incorrectly states that multiplication takes precedence over division and addition takes precedence over subtraction.

By the way, the correct answer is 37.5 and multiplication and division have equal precedence, as do addition and subtraction.

What's wrong with that
I haven't actually read the book yet but the review from Hoboken "Egregious Mistakes" actually had the wrong answer and the book had the correct answer to calculate (3/4)(7+13)/4(3*2)+15 the answer lays in putting everything in the same terms such as fractions relating to fractions. You can simplify 3/4and 20/1 to 3/1 and 5/1 and do the multiplication then divide by the 39. In this case multiplication does take precedence over the divison. The book had the correct answer in 15/39 being .3846

Melville's Moby Dick (Cliffs Notes)
Published in Paperback by Cliffs Notes (May, 1976)
Authors: Cliffs Notes Editors and James L. Roberts
Average review score:

Skip the notes
For cryin' out loud read the book! No one can put Melville's prose in a pamphlet.

Lifesaver
Thank you Cliffs Notes :0) While Moby Dick is a somewhat challenging book to grasp and put into a more meaningful context, this companion guide helped me to better understand the text. While reading the original book along with the Cliffs Notes, I was able to more clearly express the book in my own words and earn that A on my paper. This is a definate help with a complicated text!

Great
Great book, details, and synopsis. However the editors could have spent a little more time with exact detail, but for a large book there are many hidden meanings that the author put in.

The Saltwater Aquarium Handbook (Barron's Pet Handbooks)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (May, 2000)
Authors: George C. Blasiola and Matthew M. Vriends
Average review score:

Just a one more book about soltwater aquarium
If you are looking for a complete guide, don't pike up this one. I found it good for first time reader, who doesn't know a thing about reef tank, but it doesn't realy help to set up you own.

Good overview of disease and species; bad for setup
I spent months researching marine and reef aquaria for my own involvement as a hobbyist, and this was my first book. While it covers the characteristics of different vertibrates and invertibrates, as well as diseases and basic feeding information, it perpetuates many of the myths which cause so many tank "crashes", specimen deaths and discouraged hobbyists. This book does not address the most successful and widely-used water treatment and filtration methods used today: Protein skimming, live rock and live sand, and sump systems.

The science of marine tank and reefkeeping has changed radically in the past few years, lowering the mortality rate of tank inhabitants and increasing the ease of tank maintenance. This book seems to focus on the out-dated methods, and in several instances, leads the reader to believe that certain animals best left to advanced keepers are suitable for immature systems.

I would recommend this book only if you are "iffy" about starting a tank. It is a decent overview; but if you do take the "plunge", do thorough research first. Pariticipate in online forums, and buy "The Conscientous Marine Aquarist" before even purchasing your tank. You will have a solid foundation to build upon, you'll save money by purchasing the right equipment first, and you'll learn how to correctly cycle your first marine tank. From there, you'll want to pick up more specific and technical books to lead your way.

A good general overview of aquarium keeping
there are better books out there, but if you want a nice book to read on saltwater aquariums in general, then this book is quite okay.

Understanding To Kill a Mockingbird: A Student Casebook to Issues, Sources, and Historic Documents (The Greenwood Press "Literature in Context" Series)
Published in Hardcover by Greenwood Press (30 November, 1994)
Author: Claudia Durst Johnson
Average review score:

Save $10, Buy the Real Deal Instead
This manual is a waste of your money. You can buy both the actual book and the movie on Amazon for less than $25 combined, and they're both worth every penny....

UNDERSTANDING?
I first read "To Kill a Mockingbird" when I was 13 -- I had no trouble understanding it then and, not surprisingly, I still don't. Truth be told, while it more than deserves to be held as a "classic" (usually meaning insipid and torturous, though not the case here), Lee's novel is pretty straightforward.

You should have no problem determining how well Atticus Finch made his case, or how African-Americans were treated in 1935, or the history of the town that is so well-described it becomes like another character in the book.

The only reason to buy a book about understanding "To Kill a Mockingbird" is because you are a teacher who likes to beat the meaning of such things into the ground, or a student who has unfortunately been forced or advised to purchase an unnecessary guide to one of the most enjoyably down-to-earth books ever written.

Worth a Look
As a participant in this year's "One Book, One Chicago", I have read the "REAL DEAL", which is the book selected for the program's inaugural year. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and also felt I had no problems understanding the critical issues illustrated in the book. I then made the forunate decision to attend a lecture by Ms. Durst Johnson at the Chicago Public Library; a lecture based primarily on information contained in her commentary. My time was not wasted: for as much as I had indeed GRASPED about the novel, there were still many more interesting things to learn that I had not even considered. While some may consider it "beating a subject to death" (or some such nonsense), your reading experience will definitely be enhanced by referring to, but not relying on, this book's contents.

Barron's Pass Key to the Lsat: Law School Admission Test (3rd Ed)
Published in Paperback by Barrons Educational Series (March, 1999)
Authors: Jerry Bobrow, William A. Covino, David A. Kay, Daniel C. Spencer, and Merritt L. Weisinger
Average review score:

Don't Buy This Book
This book was the worst LSAT book I used to prepare for the test. It's compact size made it stressful on my eyes and the book was hard to keep open during a practice test. The questions were misleading and sometimes irrelevant. I would estimate my score went down from using this book.

not a stand-alone, but a helpful guide
I would recommend this book to someone who is wanting to narrow down their trouble spots and then move on to another source to tackle them. This book is excellent at helping you sort out your problem areas and gives questions that are about the same as those found in other test prep books. I found this, combined with a pile of prep tests availble from law services prepared me well for writing the lsat. I wouldn't suggest one use this book on its own and expect to get gleeming scores. It works great to a point, but another study aide is essential to compliment it.

A good prep book
This book is great. I've taken a lot of these standardized tests, and I've found that for a test like the LSAT, the best preparation is to know the format of the test well, to practice each section (timed and untimed), and to finish with taking a few full length practice tests. There is no need to buy a big ... book for the LSAT. There's no need to take a course. Simplicity is the key and this book is all you need. It's a ... good little book.

Constitutional Law
Published in Paperback by West Wadsworth (January, 1999)
Authors: Jerome A. Barron and C. Thomas Dienes
Average review score:

As meandering as the Mississipi, Riddled with Typos.
If you are aiming for a B, or a B+ in your Con Law Class, I recommend that you stick to your class notes, and supplement your classnotes with a Nutshell.

This hornbook is a meandering exposition of Con Law. You would be better off sticking with a close analysis of actual cases and your class notes.

Finally: as noted by reviewer below, this hornbook is marred by ridiculously large number of typographical errors. Did anyone proof read the galleys? Shame on West Group. Copy editing errors include: typos (treaties v. treaties), missing words (too many to mention), line-spacing problems. Go to the back of the book and look for page numbers for "injunction"--check out how injunction is spelled.

Gentle Reviewer

Nowak, no way
A good overview of the subject, but for a more comprehensive text with relevant arguments that would help a one L in class, get Tribe's American Constitutional history.

Simple Overview of Constitutional Law
This Hornbook provides a wonderful overview of constitutional law. It strikes the balance between an indepth study and a superficial review. It imparts a sense of the history of constitutional law, while still providing an indepth analysis of the most important cases. It is well written and easy to follow.

I used this study aid to much success in my constitutional law class.

Barron's Learn Chinese: Hanyu: The Fast and Fun Way
Published in Audio Cassette by Barrons Educational Audio (April, 1998)
Author: Lifei Ji
Average review score:

Don't waste your money or your time
It's astonishing that anybody could find this item useful. From the first lesson, inconsistencies abound. After learning to count to ten, one gets an illustrative dialog featuring an alternative form of the number "two", not yet introduced. In fact, alternate forms appear without comment seemingly at random. Much of the enunciation on the tape is quite difficult to hear, especially that of the unfamiliar phenomes. The writers & editors seem to have simply put together a package that they could justify calling "teaching Chinese" without any thought to whether it would benefit a beginning student.

Strange progression
Although speaking four languages fluently, I did not make good progress in Mandarin learning by using this book.

The initial chapters feature complex dialogs. The student is not told that these long phrases are intended to teach him the music of the language. On the contrary, the student tries to understand each word before progressing, and does not go anywhere as a result.

The dialogs are loosely translated into English, and no explanations are given word by word. The Chinese writing is not provided at all, so learners who try to use the written word to learn miss this important feature.

All in all, it is only after three month of daily learning that I was able to understand the first chapters word by word. I was stuck on the first tape (litterally, because the tape had a tendency to jam ).

A student of these tapes might understand and speak some Mandarin at the end of the book, but he will be lost and starved before, as he still won't be able to read menus and street signs. Further, he will have spent an excessive amount of time getting there as other methods are more progressive and analytical.

Simplified
This is a great tool if you are headed to Mainland China. If you plan on coming to Taiwan you need to find something with traditional characters. Just like English, Chinese also has dialects. Mainland Chinese accent is much different from a Taiwan accent. I do, however recommend that you learn Hanyu Pin Yin. You'll be glad you did!
